Banished: What Does a School Do and Is It Worth It?
Building a school in Banished allows the next generation to be exposed to survival skills from an early age and gain essential abilities. Children who grow up with education become more efficient in production fields like farming. As a result, fewer people die from dangerous or high-risk jobs, and the overall lifespan of your citizens increases.
If you want to build a school, press F6 to open the Town Services menu, then click on the School House icon. You’ll need 50 wood, 16 stone, and 16 iron to start construction. One villager can be assigned as a teacher.

Children who attend school can only be assigned to gathering tasks (like collecting materials from the environment) while they’re still students. The downside of having a school is that it delays the number of available adult workers for a few years. Technically, school-age children could be assigned to any profession, but if they’re enrolled in school, they cannot work in any job until their education is complete.
A single school can accommodate up to 20 students at a time.
